Fireworks over Brisbane

Brisbane’s annual Riverfire event is happening this Saturday night 28 September to close out the Brisbane Festival.

The ‘Tug Boat Ballet’, a crowd favourite from Sydney’s new year celebrations, will be starting at 3:30 pm.

The Australian Defence Force will be showcasing two of their aircraft: the enormous C 17A Globemaster will be flying over South Bank at 4:20 pm and the FA-18 super hornet display begins at 5:30 pm. Sadly, the dump-and-burn displays from the F-111s are a thing of the past but these planes still put on a great show.

In between all of this, the music and lights will keep the crowd entertained.

The main event – the famous fireworks – will start just after 7 pm. Try not to arrive just before they start because the crowds may block your view. It pays to arrive nice and early to get a good spot.

The best stop to get near the Cultural Forecourt at South Bank is the Cultural Centre. Most city-bound buses pass through it and the lifts make it easy to get in and out with a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

The Forecourt is nice and flat with plenty of ramps so it’s easy to move around, but be mindful of the crowds.

Translink are also offering free travel home from South Bank between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm, so it will save you time and money to take advantage of public transport rather than getting stuck looking for a car space.

Many roads will be closed throughout central Brisbane too, which you can find a list of at this link.

If you’d prefer to take in the excitement at home, Channel 9 and 104.5 Triple M will be covering the event live.
